THE POWER OF A SMILE

DEAR TEACHERS...THIS IS FOR YOU...AND YOU...OF COURSE...YES YOU... (^-^)

"Stop smiling in class!!!" that was the cold hard command I heard from a teacher next to my class in 2001...

Back to my teaching practice years ago, a teacher glared at me for being too friendly as a teacher. "What's wrong with a smile when I teach?" was my unvoiced response to her (i'm sorry..but it was a HER) imposing character. After all, the students were all happy and fully at ease with me. in fact, their rapport with me was as good as with any other teachers, if not better.

Indeed till today, i still cannot figure out the actual reason for her to be so against me for smiling while teaching. Perhaps, she was jealous at me because I wear a big broad smile ;) duhhhh....don't worry...I do not go to the level of a grinning or sniggering jackass...!!!

Being forced not to smile must be one of the hardest things for me to do and i am glad I did not have to stop smiling after going through my teaching practice. It was a compliment to hear people say that my smile is my signature. Those people was trying to tell me that they had hardly seen me without a smile. So, what is the secret of keeping all the smiles on my face all day long???

I believe the ability to think happy thoughts is important. positive thoughts are like pure fresh air that will continually invigorate us to smile. When we think positively, we drive away the unnecessary fears and senseless speculations that disturb our peace of mind. I believe that a cheerful face can bring the owner a lot of benefits.

I have a student, who will always come to my place if she doesn't have English period with me. She'll utter her 'assalamualaikum and good evening teacher', and smile..and walk away to her class. I wonder why she acts like that... Another girl loves to share her diary with me. At the end of every writing, she will draw a smiley face, and an arrow pointed to the symbol, with a note 'this is my beloved teacher nana', and she put a petit li'choc on it too. of course for me to eat...;) One day, to satisfy my curiosity, I took the trouble to ask her for the reason of her immense attitude towards me. Both of them said that my smiles have brought them happiness. "It is a joy to see you smile every day, teacher" Of course I assumed that it may not be just my smiles but that I may have resembled a person whom they liked very much in the past.

Anyway, their answer gave me a lot of encouragement to continue smiling for the rest of my life. And I pray to still smiling when my dead body is covered in that white cloth (kan org kate mati dlm senyum tu tanda2 org berimannn...). I counted the great number of students who are still contacting me after they had left school or hostel, or after i had left them... it is not a co-incidence that a smiling and friendly teacher captivates more people.

So, dear friends...ask yourseves...do you smile enough? You may want to, if you realise a smile has more power than you ever know... believe me on this...HAPPY TEACHER'S DAY teachers...!!!
